With more women feeling empowered to name their abusers, Alex is eager to return to the courtroom to do what she does best. But even she can't anticipate the complexity of her first case when she meets Lucy, a young woman who testified years earlier at a landmark federal trial . . . and now reveals that she was sexually assaulted by a prominent official during that time.
Yet Lucy's isn't the only secret Alex must uncover, with rumors swirling about one colleague's abusive conduct behind closed doors and another's violent, mysterious collapse. As the seemingly disparate cases of her client, adversary, and friend start to intertwine, Alex, along with NYPD detectives Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace, finds herself in uncharted territory within Manhattan's Rockefeller University, a premier research institute, hospital, and cornerstone of higher learning. But not even the greatest minds in the city can help her when unearthed secrets begin to collide in dangerous ways . . . and unless she can uncover the truth, the life-saving facility just may become her grave.

"Where’s the Beef?
Or in this case, the Prosecutor?
I have the entire series so I was eagerly awaiting the release of this one. It’s excellent – up to a point. Yes, there’s a lot going on but that’s to be expected in an Alex Cooper story, and the excitement keeps mounting.
One of the Fairstein trademarks is a tour of a New York landmark, usually as Alex is fighting for her life. I learn something every time I read one of her books.
However – spoiler alert – it fails at the end. I wanted to see Alex take the baddie apart in one of her brilliant courtroom scenes. Instead, he’s singing like a canary in the police station while she’s trying to find a way out of the underground tunnels. This ending seemed rushed to me.

Blood Oath A Novel An Alexandra Cooper Novel eBook Linda Fairstein Reviews
- It’s great to see Alex Cooper back in fighting form after the whiny, needy woe-is-me version in the last two books. The twists and turns and parallels and connections in this story are well done and yet again we learn the background/history/significance of another NYC landmark.
It’s a little annoying to see the way Alex is treated as she heads back to work, by friend and foe alike. More than a decade of fierce fighting for justice and a couple of months post-trauma behavior makes them all think she’s permanently handicapped? Does it quite fit the character that’s been developed over twenty books. Hopefully in book 21, after this case, she’ll be back on top in her world. I guess what bothers me is that her slide coincided with her finally finding a good, stable relationship with Chapman. It’s like the author is feeding into the narrative of a good, strong, successful career woman not being able to have a good, strong, loving relationship which I would think Fairstein ought to know better than most is certainly not true. - Where’s the Beef?
Or in this case, the Prosecutor?

'Maritime Summer' Finalist, 2018 DWAA writing contest
'Medium Rare' Finalist, 2018 DWAA writing contest - I am a huge fan of the Alex Cooper series and was eagerly awaiting the latest installment. The book proved disappointing, though. It seemed shorter than Fairstein's typical novels and a bit rushed together. Nothing was really fleshed out, there were some far-too-coincidental plot twists and I felt like I hardly got to spend any time with the characters I've grown to love so dearly. Really hoping the next one is better.
- Read half one day, and finished the next when I should have been working or doing chores. Absorbing mix of suspense, affection, likable and wicked characters. Fairstein's own understanding of perps and victims has evolved - hard to imagine the bad guy(s) in this book as fictional villians 20 years ago but the headlines show that people we thought guardian angels often fall. Fairstein also takes the reader inside another intriguing New York setting most people will never visit - it turns out part of Manhattan is built from rubble of German bombing of England.
- This story picks up where the previous novel's assassination on the court house steps ended. Alex's first week back at work becomes nonstop action. A hospital scene gets tense when the security people disappear and the protected face danger. An escape scene includes underground tunnels with no guarantee of exit. A prosecutor faces assault by deadly nerve agents. A philandering judge assaults his wife. Victims of sexual assault live with lasting trauma, and participate in preparation for grand jury, arrest, pre-trial, and trial proceedings. Most of the characters carry over from the previous book, and no doubt will appear in future stories - that is, if the people remain alive.
- This was such a great book! I've been a fan of this series for a long time. So glad to see the author has finally given Alex Cooper her spunk back in this book, the last two books had me wanting to pull my hair out over the whiny dialogue Alex kept repeating! I was always rooting for an Alex and Mike relationship and his bordering on abusive commentary in the last two books was really putting me off this relationship. Glad to see he was just his usual snarky loveable self in this book.
- I so enjoy the cast of characters. They are such a great team. I read it so fast. I also have always enjoyed her in depth descriptions and history of various New York landmarks. I live down the street from the Rockefeller University and have always wondered about it. That curiosity was fed. This story was also fed into the Me Too movement. Ms. Cooper has always been a great role model. I so hope she continues the series. I always get excited when it is announced there is a new one.
- I almost rated this 3 stars.
One of my favorite--maybe my favorite thing about this series is the descriptions of NYC and detailed description of one landmark, i.e. The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book doesn't have it, which has made me realize it was why I have bought all of the previous ones and this one.
If you have not read this series, do NOT BEGIN the series or BUY this one. Buy the first in the series or any other one but do not buy this one. I enjoyed all of the others and recommend them.
